The Day My Daughter Stopped Believing in Santa

This is a precious conversation my daughter and I had about the meaning of Christmas.
As I was putting my seven year old daughter to bed she announced, "I'm the only one in my class that doesn't believe in Santa!" She said this with a pout. "I want to believe in Him, Mom, tell me is he real or not?

I explained that being so excited about Santa Claus is like celebrating her brother, Josiah, every year on HER birthday. I asked her how she would like that. Her little lips pouted and she shook her head back and forth. I said well - it's the same when we celebrate Santa and he's not even REAL! She said, 'Well, then what do we celebrate on Jesus' birthday?' I told her, "We're celebrating redemption! When Adam disobeyed God and ate the fruit we were all banished from ever being in God's presence again, forever! Her eyes popped wide open! 'Ever?' she asked "Yes, but God in His Mercy sent His only Son Jesus - He planned it from the very beginning. He did not want to keep us away from Him. On Christmas we are celebrating that Jesus came to earth to make away for us to be reunited with God - so he was born a man to be human just like us and then.... "And then He Died." , she said somberly and paused. Then a smile spread across her face and she said, "Because He lives again, we can go to heaven and we'll all be able to see Him. Oh, I wish I could see Him. What do you think He looks like? I think he must be so big that all the children can sit on His lap." She ended this giggling at what she must have been imagining. We ended our discussion with three hugs and a kiss (our little night time ritual) and I left her to dream of heaven.
